What Is A Family Nurse Practitioner?

There are many aspects to becoming a nurse practitioner and as some people work their way through their studies they realize that they’d like to focus on just one area of the care spectrum. Providing family centered care is becoming a popular career choice for NPs and with just a bit more training they can become a family nurse practitioner.

The position they hold is reflective of their title. A family nurse practitioner focuses on all the medical and wellness needs of families. Their approach is significantly different than any other medical professional’s as a family care nurse practitioner sees health as including many aspects.

For someone interested in this area of medicine they may need to complete a two-year study program after achieving status as a nurse practitioner NP. This extra two-year nursing program delves deeply into the area of family care and the importance of that. In some locales, a student needs only one additional year of schooling to earn certification as a FNP, after obtaining their Masters. Students who are enrolled in this type of schooling can expect to learn extensively about illnesses, research and communication. Part of the educational process involves clinical work which offers the students the chance to practice what they’ve learned.

Once a person has become accredited as a family nurse practitioner there are many different job opportunities available to them. One is to work in a hospital setting alongside doctors, RNs and other family nurse practitioners. Typically a FNP will be responsible for both diagnosing and providing ongoing care to both critical care patients and others.

Many family nurse practitioners opt to go into private practice with other FNPs or with a doctor. In this capacity they are able to offer well-rounded and thorough care to families. Many family health practitioners work to improve the health of all family members by helping them adopt new lifestyle patterns including diet and exercise programs.

They are also responsible for providing ongoing care to patients with long-term illnesses. The family care practitioner will often develop a treatment plan that includes not only medications but therapy as well. Many FNPs believe in involving the entire family in the care process and will encourage parents, siblings and spouses to become directly involved.

For those FNPs who are interested in research, there are ample opportunities for them to pursue this. In many research centers and hospitals, family nurse practitioners are an integral part of the research process. Their vast training in medicine makes them excellent candidates for this.

Many private organizations are now hiring family nurse practitioners to help with the well-being of their work force In these positions, FNPs are responsible for performing entrance medical examinations, as well as determining if employees are eligible for certain health and life insurance benefits. This can be a lucrative and stable career choice for a FNP.
