Licensed Practical Nurse Jobs Are Not Just In Hospitals

Once a person has gone to school and become a Licensed Practical Nurse it's time to start looking for a job. There are many types of positions available to a LPN or LVN and all have some unique benefits. The best route to take when considering which employment position fits the best is to consider what aspects of being a LPN the individual likes best.

One environment where LPNs are always needed is in nursing homes. In fact there are plenty of jobs in nursing homes.They are required to provide ongoing care to the residents and to tend to their everyday medical needs, such as helping them take their medication. LPNs generally also help with bathing, and any feeding issues that the residents may have.

A similar type of position that many LPNs find interesting is caring for individuals in their own homes. There are two different approaches to this, one is to be a home care LPN and the other is providing care in a private nurse capacity. In the case of the home care nurse, the LPN or LVN is contracted to work for a company that provides care for individuals who need it at home. Some of these people may have just had a major surgery and although they've been discharged from the hospital, there are aspects of their care they need assistance with. Most LPNs holding positions in this capacity can expect to visit several different patients each day and this is very appealing to someone who prefers a job that is ever-changing. A private duty licensed practical nurse is a bit different. He or she generally is employed privately by an individual and their job description includes caring for that person on an ongoing basis. Some private LPNs live-in with the patient and their employment can last for years. This is more suitable for someone who prefers regularity in their work environment.

Hospitals often employ LPNs as well. In most hospitals you'll find several LPNs and LVNs working in each department. This is a good career move for someone who as gotten their LPN license but is considering pursuing a registered nursing degree in the future. The experience and knowledge they receive while working in the hospital, be it in the pediatric, psychiatric or surgical ward, can aid them when they study to become a RN.

Traveling RN positions are becoming increasingly popular and there are also many traveling LPN positions available as well. Just as with a RN, a traveling licensed practical nurse can expect to take on assignments that vary in length from a few weeks to a year. Although the remuneration package isn't as substantial as it is for a RN, a traveling LPN can expect to draw a good wage while gaining experience.

Overall with all the available positions, a graduating LPN or LVN can expect to choose something that appeal to their specific interests. From there, once they've gained more experience, they can move on to becoming a RN or perhaps an administrative LPN.
