For someone interested in helping others in the medical field, there is a wonderful opportunity awaiting them. Becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse opens up many doors professionally and is a truly fulfilling career path. To become a LPN or LVN (Licensed Vocational Nurse) some schooling is required.

The scope of training involved in becoming a LPN is not nearly as intense as it is for those wanting to become a RN. In comparison to the many years spent in school to graduate as a registered nurse, LPNs and LVNs must only complete an accredited course that lasts a year. In addition to extensive classroom training, individuals pursuing this will expect to spend time in a clinic setting as well. There they will learn the hands-on skills they need to do their job.

At the end of the course, a test is given to all who are enrolled. This is a licensing test and tends to vary slightly state-to-state. Once a person has passed the test and is licensed as a LPN or LVN in their own state, they need only apply for a license in another state should they decide to relocate at some point during their career.

Once they've graduated, the job market is open to them and it's up to the LPN to decide where they'd like to work. Hospitals are often good environments for beginning LPNs as it allows them the chance to learn new skills while earning a living. Nursing homes also utilize the services of LPNs and LVNs and many people find this to be a great place to work as it allows them the chance to aid in the patients on a daily basis. Or they can opt to be a traveling licensed practical nurse, if they prefer a change of environment every now and then in their jobs.

These companies work with patients who have becoming immobile for various reasons, including those recovering from surgery, as well as the elderly. LPNs are required to visit with the patients in their homes and help them in several ways, including feeding them, bathing them and aiding with their medications. A LPN may also need to change any dressings from wounds that the patient has. For a LPN who enjoys variety and getting out of the office, this is a perfect fit.

Although a LPN doesn't have the same skill set as a registered nurse they are still responsible for many aspects of patient care. Therefore it's crucial that individuals considering a career in licensed practical nursing have a good nature, be very patient and understanding. Patients look to RNs and LPNs for compassionate care and in order to succeed in this career, you must be able to provide that.
