What Is A Nurse Practitioner?
When an individual becomes a RN it opens a whole new world of possibilities to them. Although many people are completely fulfilled providing care to patients in a RN capacity, some want to take it a step further. For them, becoming a nurse practitioner might be a wise idea. This career choice involves more schooling, but the benefits far outweigh the time spent learning.
A nurse practitioner differs from a registered nurse in several ways. One must be a RN to qualify for the extra training to become a NP and there are many critical differences in the duties they perform. The salary one can expect to draw as a NP also isn't on par with a RN. A nurse practitioner salary can be substantially more depending on the position they take.
Once a registered nurse decides to become a nurse practitioner they must apply to nurse school again. They will be working to earn a Masters Degree. Part of the training that is required to become a NP includes a residency.
After they've become a licensed nurse practitioner there are several different career paths a person can take. Typically a NP works in conjunction with a doctor or other NPs to provide well-rounded care to patients. This may be in a hospital environment but often nurse practitioners opt to work in private clinic settings because it's more lucrative. Pediatric and psychiatric nurse practitoner jobs are also possible choices. An average day for a NP can include any number of tasks. They may be responsible for taking patients' histories, giving patients physical examinations as well as making diagnosis. Much like a physician, a NP can order lab tests and X-rays and use the results to help them determine what the medical problem with their patient is. Although not all states authorize NPs to prescribe medications, some do. The idea of using a nurse practitioner to provide ongoing care is appealing to many people for various reasons. One of the overwhelming reasons is because of cost. A visit to a NP generally costs substantially less for the average person than a visit to a MD does. With all of the advanced training a NP has, many people feel comfortable having them diagnosis and treat their problem. Another area where nurse practitioners are finding great success is in the practice of midwifery. Many new moms elect to use the services of a midwife at home as opposed to having their baby in a hospital setting. A NP can further their training to become certified as a midwife. This is obviously an incredibly fulfilling choice of career as the nursing practitioner becomes a vital part of helping a new life begin. If a RN wants to take their interest in medicine a step further and take on more responsibility, becoming a nurse practitioner is an excellent choice. It's lucrative, fulfilling and incredibly interesting.
