Training At Vocational Nursing Schools

One of the most appealing aspects of becoming a licensed practical nurse is that training can take place at one of the many vocational nursing schools that are found all over the country. Unlike a registered nurse, LPNs and LVNs can take their year of schooling at a vocational college. This typically means less money spent in tuition and a small class size. It also means that they are certified and working much sooner than a RN.

Enrolling in vocational nursing college typically requires the applicant to possess at minimum a high school diploma. The other requirements vary depending on each school but typically the applicants must also be trained in CPR and first aid. Proof of this will need to be presented during the application process.

Almost all of the vocational nursing schools have a pre-screening process that applicants must take part in. During this process, the applicant will be required to take a written examination and also take part in an interview. The interview is given in order to determine what the applicant's goals are as well as to judge their suitability for becoming a licensed practical nurse.

Competition to get into the top nursing schools can be fierce, depending on the area in which the applicant lives. Therefore it's incredibly important that anyone who wants to enroll in one of the licensed practical nursing programs do so as soon as admissions open.

There are financial aids in place for people who need it. The curriculum for training to be a LPN and LVN are intense and therefore it's advised that anyone enrolled in the program focus mainly on their studies. While enrolled in the courses to become a LPN, a student can expect to learn many of the basic skills needed to perform the job. Some of the coursework includes learning about human anatomy, pediatrics and obstetrics. Students also are taught basic first aid procedures as well as how to administer most types of medications.

Once a person has completed the course they are required to take an exam that if passed, ensures they are a certified LPN or LVN. If they want to work outside the state they graduated in, they will need to take another exam that grants them nationwide certification. The majority of LPNs and LVNs take this exam shortly after graduating.
